Its founder as a key player
Hellman & Friedman has been able to stay afloat for years despite the various investment fads and changing market cycles of the industry because it has the best founder in the investment business, Warren Hellman.
One of the two founders of Hellman & Friedman and a key player in its success, Warren Hellman was a devoted family man, a highly successful businessperson, active philanthropist, and dedicated musician, a patron of the arts, endurance athlete and a great person.
Born in New York City in 1934, Warren Hellman grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. After serving in the U.S. Army and attending Harvard Business School, Hellman began his financial career at Lehman Brothers, becoming at the age of 26 the youngest partner in the history of the firm where he would later become chairperson.
After a distinguished career on Wall Street, Warren Hellman returned to the West and, together with Tully Friedman, founded Hellman & Friedman, which over the years became one of the industry’s leading private equity firms.
In the community, Warren and his family generously supported many organizations and causes related to the arts, public education, public health, civic life, among many other foundations. They also assisted in the creation and funding of the San Francisco Free Clinic.
One of Warren’s many hobbies was music, in which he found peace and over the years, he actively learned to play the banjo to share his love of music with others. The greatest thing he did for this love was founding the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, an annual free three-day music festival that draws thousands of people throughout the Bay Area.
The founder of Hellman & Friedman was also an endurance athlete. He regularly managed to complete 100-mile races, horse rides and combinations of both. He also dabbled in skiing and was a great nationally ranked race skier, becoming captain of a U.S. ski team in the late 1970s.
Warren believed deeply in the power of people to achieve incredible things and used the success he achieved over the years to improve and enrich the lives of many people. During his career, in addition to Hellman & Friedman, Hellman helped found many successful and highly regarded companies such as Maxtris Partners, Jordan Management Company, Farallon Capital Management and Hall Capital Partners.
In summary, Warren Hellman was a man who lived his life to the fullest, had an active mind and body, and used his great vision to found one of the most successful equity investme
companies in the United States. His vision of generating well-being for people can be summed up in this quote:
“One of the reasons our firm has thrived is that people treat each other with respect and decency. People want others to succeed, because if they succeed, we succeed.”
Hellman & Friedman is not only one of the most experienced companies in the investment sector in the United States; it is also a great example of how a company uses human talent to carry out all its objectives, as well as the good treatment and care of its clientele as its main asset.
The ideals of its founders, especially Warren Hellman, have made Hellman & Friedman a respected firm that, when it comes to the investment industry, needs no letter of introduction and any company will be happy to work with them.
